In December 2024, Sam Meineke passed away at the age of 93. As the founder of Meineke Discount Mufflers in 1971, he opened the first franchise location in 1972. Sam had a drive and a dedication that lives on today in the more than 800 Meineke locations across the North America and Mexico.

“Sam’s vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional customer service laid the foundation for the company we are today,” said Rob Fillman, President of Meineke. “Sam established the Meineke brand with a simple but powerful principle: to provide drivers with reliable, high-quality auto care that they could trust.”

From humble beginnings

Sam was born into a sharecropping family in Oklahoma, where the family was barely scraping by. He told MSA Worldwide, “Momma referred to us as poor people, but it didn’t really hit me until I went to school and saw the other kids eating nice lunches. All I had was cornbread and a bit of dried meat, wrapped in a piece of cloth or newspaper.”

After moving to Texas where his father was employed in a shipyard, Sam started to work any job that he could find. At one of the businesses where he worked, Sam found a mentor who explained the basics of running a business.

An entrepreneur gets his start

Sam saved money from his many jobs and purchased an automotive service station in 1951 before he was 21 years old. The business limped by for six months until Sam started putting in extra effort with customers. That approach paid off, as customers started to come to his shop for the stellar service.

Sam also believed in the power of visualizing his success, telling MSA Worldwide, “You’ve got to prime yourself for success, visualize it.”

The next year, Sam took on a partner, Edward Bass, who was a friend from school and who owned a different service station. Together, they invested in many opportunities – none of which were successful. But, they learned along the way and continued with their service station.

By 1970, they had 12 locations; However, Sam no longer enjoyed managing the business. He and Edward parted ways.

Meineke Discount Mufflers is born

Knowing the automotive business, Sam studied the landscape and realized that Midas was the only major muffler company. He decided to open a competitor to Midas – starting with one Meineke location in 1971. His ethos was to win on speed, price, and service, and that paid off. The profitable model was appealing as a franchise business, and, in the next year, the first franchise location opened. Sam continued to run his own stores.

Innovation has always been a theme with Meineke, as Sam would test new ideas in the ten shops he owned personally before passing them on to the franchisees.

“By the time I got into franchising, I had enough experience in operating and managing the business that I could really help my franchisees, which is what I really enjoyed… The Meineke concept turned out to be a great business. Particularly the franchising, that was the most exciting thing I have ever done. I don’t think I’ll ever top it,” Sam told MSA Worldwide.

In 1999, Meineke transitioned to full-service care centers and would eventually purchase Maaco to form Driven Brands

Rob concluded: “Sam’s passion for service, integrity, and community set the standard for all of us, and his legacy continues to live on through every Meineke franchise, technician, and team member. We know Sam’s spirit will continue to guide and inspire us in the years to come, and we are grateful for the enduring impact he had on all of us. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
