Know your customers needs, and you will always be able to serve them
To recognize National Black Business Month this August, Driven Brands shares the story of Dwayne Simon, owner of CARSTAR Brooklyn Auto Solutions.

When you think about what's required to work in the auto industry, the first thing that might come to mind is a knowledge of and passion for cars. And while yes, these traits will lend well to finding success, for Dwayne Simon, it’s about the people.
Since his start in the auto industry over a decade ago, Dwayne has prioritized getting to know his community above all else, closely followed by providing education and the highest quality service.
We spoke with Dwayne to learn more about how he became the owner of CARSTAR Brooklyn Auto Solutions, one of the largest minority-owned repair shops in Brooklyn, and the people who are a part of his story.
How did you get started in this business?
Dwayne Simon (DS): I have been in the auto industry for over ten years. I owned and operated a car rental company and have been an auto damage adjuster both on staff and independently. I’ve seen all aspects of the auto repair process and insurance industry.
Throughout my journey, I met experienced painters, technicians, and insurance professionals who are passionate about the industry. The CARSTAR Brooklyn Auto Solutions team consists of auto damage adjusters and professionals with over 20 years of collective experience in bringing innovative solutions to the auto repair field.
Can you tell us a bit about your business? Whom do you serve, and what's the team like?
DS: We are in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, NY, which is largely an American Caribbean community. The CARSTAR Brooklyn Auto Solutions team is made up of culturally diverse men and women who are excited and energetic about the auto repair industry.
We provide excellent customer service and educate our customers about their vehicles. We have experienced painters and technicians who repair vehicles based on original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards. We work together as a team to provide the best experience possible.
What have been some of your favorite lessons of business ownership?
DS: I have learned that you must research every aspect of the business regarding the best supplies, products, technology, customer needs, and employee engagement. I am a lifelong learner who will continue to grow with the industry.
What's been one of the biggest surprises along the way?
DS: We were surprised by how ill-informed people are about the vehicle repair process and their car insurance. Customers sometimes make major errors when purchasing insurance due to the lack of guidance in regards to insurance and vehicle maintenance.
What are your core values/non-negotiables as a business and business owner?
DS: We provide safe and quality auto body repairs. We will not cut corners to save money, and we are honest with our customers. Providing quality auto repairs requires patience, integrity, and continuous training. We are here to educate our customers and clarify the repair process.
August is Black Business Month. What have you learned and what do you want to share about your business?
DS: CARSTAR Brooklyn Auto Solutions is one of the largest minority-owned repair shops in Brooklyn. Our team consists of men and women from Caribbean and Hispanic descent, as well as military veterans. We will continue to serve the community of Canarsie by providing safe and quality auto body repairs.
In the future, we will host community events to educate our consumers about safe vehicle maintenance and get involved with local schools and churches to provide wellness and career events. We are excited to share our experience and knowledge with the community.
What's your advice to an entrepreneur just getting started?
DS: Get to know the community that you operate in. We believe if you know the needs of your customers, you will always be able to service them properly.
